River Island is embarking on an exciting journey as the business invests to capitalise on the growth of digital and the Commercial Finance team sits at the heart of this decision making.

With the Head of Commercial Finance having joined the team at the end of 2016, the Commercial Finance team is working closely with senior stakeholders and commercial teams to drive the right decisions and ensure River Island is making the right decisions to continue to grow into the future.

Reporting to the Senior Finance Business Partner for Central Costs, you will support the head office and finance stakeholders with accurate reporting and influential analysis, providing financial control and support for costs and investments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Business partner with central department teams (including IT, Logistics, Visual, HR and Buying & Merchandising)
  • Produce annual budget and update periodic forecasts with department heads- challenge assumptions, variances, and suggest areas for efficiencies
  • Support all departments in producing business cases for investments and make recommendations regarding approvals

The Role

Reporting & Analysis

  • Streamline processes and reporting to free up time to understand costs and deliver more analysis
  • Ownership of cost reporting, analyse periodic variances to budget/ prior year and prepare associated commentary for department heads & in the management accounts
  • Ownership of key models (headcount, logistics forecasting, IT contractor forecast & actuals)
  • Support Finance Business Partner in producing periodic reports
  • Support Finance Business Partner in identifying key cost drivers by department to update central cost allocations model across channels
  • Support Finance Business Partner in post investment appraisals
  • Ensure timely periodic exception reporting to all department heads to signal areas of overspend or operating inefficiencies; highlight in the company Risks & Ops reporting

Business Partnering

  • Develop an understanding of all departments including the key cost drivers and reporting requirements
  • Organise and lead periodic meetings with department heads & team to ensure ownership and accuracy of forecasts in time for board reporting           
  • Preparation of tailored reporting to department heads to allow better decision making (including preparing packs for ad hoc department meetings with CEO)
  • Develop close working relationships with all dept heads and provide support for decision making
  • Work with all departments to identify cost proposals which lead to operational efficiencies with a view to cost savings
  • Monitor key Company cost drivers to identify when these are outside acceptable ranges
  • Ad hoc work as required

  • Strong excel skills and ability to work quickly and accurately
  • Studying towards a relevant accounting qualification
  • Possess strong analytical skills and in particularly can demonstrate the ability to conclude and make recommendations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Knowledge of Oracle and Essbase desirable but not essential
